Preventing Window Strikes
Birds hit windows because they can’t see the transparent barrier and they believe they can fly through it to the tree they see in the reflection. While anti-reflective windows do exist, this may be a humane solution that is out of many budgets. Here are three ways you can help prevent birds from hitting your windows.
1. Anti-window strike decals come in many conspicuous and inconspicuous designs and help birds see the window and adjust their depth perception to avoid a collision.
2. Closing your blinds still leaves a lot of reflection but it does help show there is a barrier and the bird can not fly through the window like it suspects.
3. Use 1/4 inch mist netting and attach it to each corner on the outside of a window so that it is taut. Emboss it from the window to create a “crash pad” type of effect so that the bird will bounce off if it after it flies into the window. This fine mesh also helps limit the reflectivity of the window.
A lot of times birds are just stunned when they fly into windows and just need an hour or two to get their bearings. All they need from you is your help keeping them in a safe, quiet, and solitary space while they do that. If you see them having difficulty breathing or another obvious injury such as asymmetric wings, blood, or deformities, jump straight to step 4 and get them to a licensed wildlife rehabilitation team ASAP! If you have any questions about this process, contact your local licensed wildlife rehabilitator.
